News Article - The Baseball Evangelist

A Little Bit of Baseball, Mixed With a Little Bit of Faith
By Matt Preprost

Actor Marc Moir is hoping his track record will help deliver a home run for a Zambian aid project a group of Winnipeggers will undertake later this summer.

The 26 year old West End actor is putting on a one man play that mixes baseball with faith and charts the path of a 1800s baseball player from the diamond and into the pulpit.

The Baseball Evangelist, which was written by Moir's father, tells the tale of Billy Sunday, a popular major league baseball player int he late 1800s who went on to become one of North America's most influential evangelist.

"During his playing days, he has to make the decision of whether he's going to stick to baseball or go into the ministry," said Moir, whose play Padre X was named one of the top five plays of last summer's Fringe Festival.

"And he really became the Billy Graham of his day. He was crazy, an absolute wild man, but boy did he ever have an effect on the people he spoke to. He's a really fun character ."

Proceeds from the play will help send 30 members of the Weston-based Cross Church to Zambia in August. The team will build a new plumbing system and security fence, provide medical treatment and hook up a computer lab at the Village of Hope orphanage. The cost of the project is about $225,000.

Alan Dunclafe, senior pastor of Cross Church, said the trip will be the first time members of the church visit the village after beginning to send help a number of years ago. The church so far has helped raise money for a school, and two orphanages for children and teens.

Moir will perform The Baseball Evangelist Sunday May 1, at Cross Church at 1787 Logan Ave.

This evening will begin at 6:30pm with hot dogs, Cracker Jacks, prizes and visits from members of the Winnipeg Goldeyes. The play begins at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $10 and are available at the door or by calling the church at 632-7322, or by emailing tickets@crosschurch.ca.

Soy Bean

I can't believe I haven't posted a baby update in a long time!

Soy Bean is now approximately 6 pounds and growing a lot each week. This week baby found my ribs and decided to get stuck in them. That was not a pleasant experience.

As for everything else, the baby's room is all ready to go. Last week we picked up the last few essentials (like a car seat) and now we are just waiting. The one thing I have procrastinated in doing is packing a bag to take with us to the hospital. I figure I still have time before that is really needed.

Marc is busy with writing and a few shows here and there. I am busy with enjoying my maternity leave! Nothing could be greater then waking up whenever I feel like it, and having a nap whenever I feel like it......I am glad I decided to take some time off of work before this baby comes to get a lot of rest and enjoy a few of life's simple pleasures.

My next few weeks will be busy with hanging out with my mom. She is off of work now until September, however not for as good of a reason as I have. Today she spent around 3 hours having her knee replaced. Anyway, since I am not working and still able to get around, I have decided to spend as much of her recovery time with her as I can. Tomorrow I will be heading to the hospital to keep her company and next week I will move in to the house to take care of her every need! (you can all now insert your comments on how sweet of a daughter I am.....I can wait for a few minutes!)

Other then that Marc and I are trying to make every quiet moment last. This baby is coming soon (hopefully sooner rather then later).

T-Minus 10 Weeks

Well folks, we are coming in to the home stretch. 10 more weeks! (Don't worry, I know that babies hardly come on time, I use my time line very loosely!)

Lately I have been feeling very anxious. I was talking with a friend the other day, and I suddenly realized that there is still a whole lot to do before baby is born. So naturally I started to panic. Thankfully I have a husband who constantly reminds me that we have time to get things in order before a delivery.

Speaking of delivery, Marc and I have now gone to 2 prenatal classes, and I am SO THANKFUL that we signed up for them. There is so much that parents need to know before it happens, I think mostly to mentally prepare for such a journey. This last week's class made me think about my birth plan. Now, don't hold me to it, but I am starting to heavily weigh the option of going "natural" (aka no drugs). But I still have 10 weeks, so don't quote me just yet.

An update on baby:
Soy Bean seems to be growing nicely. As the people in my office can attest to, it is growing and moving lots. Today I yelled out "holy crap" as I felt the baby trying to rip through my side. I am sure that's not really what it was doing, but it sure felt like that.

Overall I have enjoyed my pregnancy and have very little to complain about. I just love the feeling of baby moving inside (probably one of the coolest feelings ever). Things I am not so fond of: acid reflux (which has only occurred twice as far as I can remember) and water weight gain (which isn't too bad right now, but I am finding that I can't wear my wedding rings anymore due to swollen hands).

All I know is I am very excited to meet this little Soy Bean!

Another Day

Well, not much is going on here. Marc and I just work all day and relax when we can. We picked up the baby crib this week! The baby bedding is coming, maybe, next week. So things are coming together nicely with baby. We won't be setting the room up for a while, just because there is a whole bunch of other things that need to be moved out of the room first and I would like to paint too.

Baby is starting to grow. Sometimes it feels as though it weighs in close to a few pounds (probably not quite yet) but it gets heavy. Soy Bean is also moving a lot. Last night Marc and I went to see THE WIZARD OF OZ here in Winnipeg, and it was so loud, which baby loved. It decided it would like to dance and jump around during the whole show too! I don't mind it, although sometimes it is annoying (like at night when I am trying to sleep). It's a nice reminder of what is to come and how our lives will be changing in 15 weeks.

Work for me has been busier but still really slow. I have been averaging 5-10 registrations a day. However, that only keeps me busy until lunch. My afternoons are usually filled with finding things to do, which can be tricky.

Marc is busy writing and trying to book shows. Sadly this time is really slow for him, and I know that he is bored when he is not acting in something. He is working on the Camp Arnes fundraiser that is happening in September, I have read a bit of it and it seems pretty awesome! After listening to him explain it to me, again it sounds pretty great!

Well, that's all for me today :)

Baby Moir Update

Well, it's official. Marc and I make super cute babies! I am sure that once everyone sees him/her they will agree as well!

About 6 weeks ago we had our first ultrasound due to a baby scare. We were worried and only cared that baby was healthy. This time was different. Not that we didn't want to know if our baby was okay, but we could spend our time at the hospital enjoying every moment, instead of fearing the worst.

Like I said, I am pretty sure that our baby is the absolute cutest thing ever created! And we only had a flat, black and white version of it.

Here are a list of things we got to see/learned about our baby today! (this is mostly for me to remember when I look back on this time in my life, but I am sure you would like to know too)

-Our baby has a big head. Now the tech said it measured big, which apparently is normal. But I like to think it's because Marc has a big head (not a literal one, of course). No, actually what I was really thinking/hoping was that it doesn't grow anymore because the last thing I want to is push out a big headed baby!

-Baby Moir does not like to be woken up early and poked and prodded. On a normal day baby doesn't move around until lunch time and is not active until the evening. So today, poor baby had to get up early and be woken up at 7am to be looked at. Because of this he/she refused for the longest time to cooperate. He/she had its back to the tech for almost the whole time she was looking. Silly baby!

-This baby has the Abrahams' nose. Of course it would. The one thing I didn't like the most about my body and my poor baby gets it! Actually, I have grown in to liking my nose, I am sure baby will too. I talked to my dad this morning and mentioned this very thing, I think he was happy that something of his was passed down!

-Our baby is a mover and a shaker. It was so amazing to see it wave it's arms and kick it's legs! Something so small is so complete. All I can say is amazing!

-We got to see a lot of other body parts (legs, arms, hands, feet, eyes, ears, mouth, heart, spin, rib cage, etc.) It was so amazing (I really need to think of another word).

-Heart beat is 149

-Growth is on schedule, they actually gave us a new due date of May 21 (two days off, so I am not really worried about it)

-Sadly, we did not find out if we are having a boy or a girl. But I think I am okay with that. Baby was being silly (as mentioned before) and making it hard for the tech to see anything down there. I think we will still do the 3D baby thing in the next month or so just in case we can find out.

Anyway, that is the Baby Moir update for today!

Baby Time

Well, this blog won't be a long one. I just thought I would let you all know that Friday (so in two more sleeps) Marc and I will be having our scheduled ultra sound! We are hoping at this appointment to find out what we are having. And of course to check in with baby and make sure he/she is doing well and growing strong!

I will post more after Friday morning!

ps. I didn't mention this, but it's at 7am. Who in their right mind schedules something that early? And to top it off I am not allowed to empty my bladder for at least an hour before hand. Yuck.

CUBA!!!!

Well, it's been a while since we got back from Cuba, however life has just been to busy to write about our time there!

First off I must say that Cuba is a great vacation spot. It's warm, beautiful, the people there are amazingly warm, however the food is awful. I would not recommend this trip to a pregnant woman! (Especially if you are like me and like to munch on things all day long and have certain North American cravings)

Despite the food, Marc and I had a very relaxing time! We spent a few days on the beach, took a boat tour, got bitten by crabs, walked through Havana, and Marc even got to see a local baseball game!

Cuba is truly a beautiful place and rich with history.

Sadly, on day one of our adventure our camera broke.....leaving us with very few picture memories and none to share with you. Actually we do have some pictures saved off of the memory card, but I am sure you all don't really want to see what we look like at 4am (while we were waiting for our flight to leave).

It was a great time, and I am still feeling relaxed from our trip!
